London Walks

Welcome to the Walks. These are based on the tours which my father, Roy Ellis, devised when he worked in Lombard Street in the 1970s.

  • “Monument” means the tower itself, not the tube.
  • Places mentioned on each walk are only a sample to indicate the general route.
  • Unless otherwise stated, all walks take around 2.5 hours excluding any lunch break

BARBICAN – starts and ends at The Monument
(Some segments are navigationally untested!)

BLACKFRIARSstarts and ends at Blackfriars railway station
(A still researching this one but folks are welcome on a fact finding expedition)

CLOTH FAIRThe Monument to Cloth Fair
(A tangential version of Dad’s original Barbican walk)

LUNCH at The Old Red Cow or nearby hostelry (or hop on tube for Indian in Drummond Street)

LIMEHOUSEWestferry DLR station to The Monument
(Experimental walk, first section untested, )
Isle of Dogs, Limehouse Church, The Grapes (pub), Limehouse Cut and Basin, Shadwell Park and Basin, Tobacco Dock
LUNCH at Captain Kidd (peaceful riverside pub)
Wapping Docks, St Katherine’s Dock, Seething Lane, Billingsgate Market, Monument.

PETTICOAT LANEstarts and ends at The Monument

LUNCH at Spitalfields Market (food market, dozens of choices) then

SHADWELL – The Monument to London Bridge station
(The longest walk. Based on Dad’s original St Katherines Dock walk
with my own extension into the Wapping docklands.)
